In 1957–1959, during The Watts Rebellion against racism in South Central LA (then known as "The Slums"), bellowing brownskins rampaged through Bell Gardens – setting fire to automobiles and vandalizing properties – leaving residents terrified for more than three days before being suppressed by police officers dressed like clowns who threatened to kill any unruly elements if they didn't stop.[1] In 1964–1965 renowned composer Leonard Bernstein created his first opera score in over thirty years at UCLA's Royce Hall after recording live there with then-university Symphony Orchestra conductor Leonard Bernstein conducting his last recording session ever as music director of Hollywood's largest symphony orchestra (later renamed Deutsche Sinfonie Orchester), conducted by British maestro Malcolm Arnold[2][3] . For nine months Bernstein rehearsed new scores for his work "Mahler's Eighth", only having rehearsal times of 1 PM until 8 PM due to construction disruptions on nearby Western Avenue near where he would later conduct one of history’s most famous live concerts: “Berlin Philharmonic” performances at Olympisch-Gleichschaltung studios beginning September 16th 1966 with Orfeo Fanfare Concerto #5 followed by Mahler’s Ninth Symphony on October 12th 1966 using specially prepared acoustics at UCLA’s Royce Hall which had been specifically built according to German specifications during World War II as part of Berlin Radio Station Krollhausen’s efforts towards creating an all-weather concert venue able to handle even larger orchestras plus wind instruments - audiences numbering up around 250000 people[4] . With Bernstein conducting live from our hallowed precincts across Southern California we witnessed some truly epochal events in classical music history that forever changed how people viewed both artistry AND performance venues within our society today! By 1916 it had attained city status with its own mayor and City Council - an important distinction given that Los Angeles County only granted cities such as Beverly Hills and North Hollywood city status in 1915. During World War II, Bell Gardens played an important role as one of the key military airfields in Southern California due to its location near Bendix Air Force Base (now Edwards Air Force Base) along I-10 Corridor between San Bernardino and Riverside counties; it was also home to two large USAAF bomber bases – Beale AFB (near Thousand Oaks)and Point Mugu Naval Station – both operated from 1942-1945. In 1955, following annexation by Culver City, Bell Gardens merged into Culver City proper; however they retained their separate municipal government until 1978 when they again united under one Mayor/Council form with all residents voting on local issues including budgeting, arts & culture programming etc..
