There is no question that firearms have been a part of the Bell Gardens community for over 100 years. The range was later sold to the city in 1915 and became City Hall Park. Among those present were John Larkin (manager of the Sears Roebuck department store), Harry Wesson (owner of Wesson Firearms factory), John Hirsch (president of Kaiser Steel Company) and Joseph Mosely (founder/director/CEO of Simpson Shoes). After much discussion, it was decided that four shotguns would be purchased by the new force and stored at City Hall until needed. This event is considered one of the first steps inBell Gardens becoming a gun-owning community. Over time, other organizations such as Golfers’ Protective League (GPL) or Rotary Club helped raise money for First Amendment Society functions such as parades or fund-raisers for local candidates. The original citrus orchards that dot the landscape were developed byorange groves manager William Hurd and his son-in-law Arthur Ashe Jr., who also served as mayor from 1922 to 1928 and 1930 to 1934). Upon Hurd's death in 1926, his son successor Arthur Ashe took over management of the orchards for his father's estate until he died in 1961; during this time Orange grove production shifted from concentrate to fruit juices concentrate production which continued until 1986 when Citrus Heights began producing oranges for local markets again following its purchase by Walmart USA . Today there are more than 20 standalone orange trees operating out of Bell Gardens alone producing approximately 2 million pounds (1 Kilogram) per year worth of fresh oranges! One significant development that took place during this time was the opening of what is now known as UCLA Campus; construction began on August 29th, 1919 under then Mayor Edmondson along withfour other elected officials including future Governor Ronald Reagan who helped break ground on what would become one of Southern California’s most important landmarks – still known today as “the Great Park” – 15 years later! UCLA had been founded just three months earlier but didn't yet have any students or buildings!
