Salinger lived with his family in a home near campus from 1951 until 1961; actor Tom Hanks moved into a house next door to Salinger’s when he first bought it in 1978; current Mayor Marty Singer was raised here as well as Olympic silver medalist Judson Lowenthal, who became an advocate for downtown development around bellagio complex; actress Shangela moved into her own house just outside of town after winning second place on season nine of “ American Idol” Many places have been named after people or things associated with Bell Gardens: Edie Sedgwick Boulevard runs through town – naming after one of its founders (Edie Sedgwick also starred in several films set within/around Bell Gardens); residents often refer to their street address as "Athens Avenue" because so many Greek Revival homes prominent along that corridor were built there during that time period The Arboretum & Botanical Garden is located about 1 mile southwest of downtown Los Angeles off Euclid Avenue between Fairfax Drive and Avalon Way and opened on October 6th, 2009

The Bell Gardens area was first settled by Mexicans in 1874, and founded as Roma de las Palomas (Rome of Palm Trees). In 1907, it became Bell Gardens and was annexed by Los Angeles. The name may be taken from two streets in the area: Hermosa Avenue and Indian Hill Road. The city's first post office opened in 1911. By 1925, when it merged with neighbouring Hollywood to become Bell-Hollywood-Highland City, the population had grown to over 100,000 people. After World War II ended and the Korean War began, manybellgroveños returned to their homes after serving in our military or escaping during that time of war; they are accounted for about 80% of today’s residents."

It was founded on October 15, 1887 by John Wesley Eldredge and his wife Fanny Price Eldredge. The name is derived from two Bell telephone companies: Northern California Telephone Company (NBC) and Southern California Telephone Company (SCTC). The first store in Bell Gardens opened in 1887. By 1902, there were twenty-four stores and businesses in Bell Gardens. In 1907 the first post office was opened in Bell Gardens with three mailboxes. In 1912, the city of Bell Gardens incorporation occurred. On December 2nd of that year, voters approved annexation of neighboring Compton by vote of 56% to 44%. In 1924–25 or 1926–27 one of the largest real estate deals ever made in Los Angeles occurred when Harry Laughlin agreed to sell his holdings in Paramount Pictures Corporation to Vincente Minnelli for $5 million dollars; this transaction created Hollywood's first movie industry consolidation phase which lasted until 1957 when rival studios MGM and Paramount merged into Universal Studios
