Bell Gardens was founded in 1887 by John T. Bell and his wife, Sarah A. Wallace. The Bells were pioneers in the agricultural industry and their bell garden is one of the first gardens in Los Angeles County. The name "Bell Gardens" is derived from a gift from Mrs. Elisha Bradley to her husband, John T., on their honeymoon in 1869. In 1897, the Park Service purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land adjacent to present-day Bell Gardens from Mr. and Mrs. Jens Rasmussen for $1,000 cash and also donated two acres (0.8 km²) of parkland to be used as a public playfield for children only. The Rasmussen property remains part of today's Bell Gardens Parkland division.) The original homes located at 7603 N Western Ave were destroyed by fire on May 12, 1886 while they were being remodeled into a home association called "The Bella Union." The new homes were built just east of where they once stood and are still standing today as part of Friends Meeting House #2 which is located at 8031 N Western Ave., right across the street from where the old Bella Union once stood! John T.'s son-in-law Cyrus Ketchum started a grocery store on Doheny Road south of Glassell School which became very successful after opening in 1893; it was later renamed Ketchum's Grocery Co.-Ltd., now Robertson's Grocery Co.-Los Angeles Inc.. In 1903, Cyrus Ketchum married Alice Laughlin who was also pregnant with their first child when she died suddenly due to an illness at age 26 years old; Alice would go on to have five more children with Cyrus before he died suddenly as well at age 49 years old!! For many years it has been alleged that Alice's death may have been caused by arsenic poisoning from drinking water supplies served by Ketchum’s Store but this theory has never been proven! On January 14th, 1912 President William McKinley delivered his final address before leaving office following four terms as president; during that speech he dedicated what is now known as McKinley Park near downtown Los Angeles along Santa Monica Boulevard between First Street & Westwood Boulevard – now known as Hollywood Blvd.– saying “This site selected because its advantages will recommend itself to other communities interested in similar advantages...It will become an important center not only for business but for pleasure also” In 1916 rediscovered coins dating back to 350 BC were found buried beneathbrush near what is now Hollywood Boulevard & Vine Street NW inside what is now Sony Pictures Studios….the site had previously been occupied by an early Pueblo Indian settlement called La Brea Tar Pits….the coins date back to over 4 centuries ago! On July 16th 1931 local resident Art CodyDiscovered5early AmericanGoldcoinsat LA PitsSite…..this event helped spark off LA Gold Rush which lasted until 1933 when all gold was mined out
