The bell gardens were founded in 1892 by John A. Sloat and his brother-in-law Jesse Frederick Smith as part of their efforts to promote horse carriage racing in Los Angeles County. The area now known as Bell Gardens was first settled by Native Americans and around 1800, it served as a cattle ranch for Spanish settlers who had arrived in Southern California from Mexico City. In 1892, when Sloat and Smith purchased land east of downtown Los Angeles from José Joaquín Murillo for $1 million, they named their new development after John A. Bell (the original namesake of downtown LA), an entrepreneur and philanthropist who had helped encourage horse carriage racing in Southern California. In 1902, Sloat donated land at the eastern end of Bell Gardens overlooking Mulholland Drive to create what would become one of the city's most popular summer tourist destinations – Today'sBellGarden features fine gardens designed by landscape architect Edward Condon with views over Beverly Hills and Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean; it is also home to a number of small businesses including several wineries and restaurants. Bell Gardens is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. The population was 61,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Bell Gardens neighborhood which now includes Bell Gardens was developed from Rancho Cucamonga land that was donated to the city by John D. Rockefeller in 1907. At first it was called "Rancho Cucamonga." In 1912, when City Hall was built, an ordinance changed it to "Bell Gardens." The name comes from two large trees near where the original park began - Griffith Park and Bell (then Captain James A.) Cooke's estate onAddress Road east of Mentone Avenue in 1881 stretched over 8 acres and had 50 trees. When it burned down in 1928, all of those trees were lost. In 1916, Mayor John Pemberton dedicated a new park on what is now Santa Monica Boulevard between Vernon and Beverly Streets as a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ladd who had given $10,000 for its creation three years earlier. The initial location included only small areas around Parkside Drive and Montebello Avenue while further development took place along Santa Monica Boulevard south of Vernon Street including opening up what is now Hollywood Studios behind Westwood High School in 1932-1933 (the original Hollywood studios). It wasn't until 1948 that a larger playground opened at what is now Highland Park Beach with additional facilities such as baseball diamonds, a pool, tennis courts and more spread throughout various neighborhoods across South Pasadena including Baldwin Hills (northwest side), Echo Park (southwest side) and North Hollywood (east side). That same year also saw construction begin on Arlington Heights which would become home to manyUCLA athletes before finally becoming home to Bell Gardens after UCLA left town following World War II. In 1951 Mayor Ralph Bunche announced plans for another park adjacent to Central Library on Western Avenue between University Place/Broadway Street and Vermont Avenue/Walsh Way; this 2 acre site would eventually become Rose Bowl stadium or "Bunche Stadium" as well as numerous other institutions including USC Trojans football games beginning with their first game there against Notre Dame on September 26th 1950 known then as simply "Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum". After being abandoned for several years due primarily to funding shortages during the Korean War era, Bunche resurrected his plans for the new stadium with support from state legislators Don Edwards Jr., Herb Kohlman Sr., Jack Kempeter etc.. And so began one of LA's most famous sports venues – one that has seen some legendary players such as Pelé play football there like Jerry Rice*, Tom Landry* and Joe Namath*. *Landry played college ball at Redondo Beach High School
