Beaumont, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 20,529 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after San Bernardino. The name of Beaumont was anglicized to Beaufort when it was founded by Englishman John Oxenford in 1824 as an outpost on the survey of Rancho Cucamonga that became part of Mexico City. The first people to live in what is now Beaumont were Native American tribes who used the area for hunting and camping sites. In 1821, Mexican Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Spanish-born José Joaquin Murrieta to establish a post at what is now downtown Beaumont with twelve men, including Oxenford and his brother George. The Post Office opened in 1827 and became known as "Beaufort" because Trustee James Beaufort donated land for the post office. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Anglo-Americans started arriving here beginning with Captain James Cook's 1797 voyage on HMS Resolution which anchored off Beaumont Bay on December 12th Aboard ship Cook took possession of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and began trading with local Indians before landing ashore at Palm Springs November 29th 1797 while under way from Botany Bay to Monterey Bay via Baja California; during this leg he also visited Mission Dolores (El Cerrito) on October 9th 1797. In 1845 beaver numbers had dwindled so much that two fur traders built a cabin near what is now First Street and Main Avenue where they fished until supplies ran out in 1865; after their death their store continued operations until 1863 when it burned down due to over fishing by young children playing near the lake shoreline In 1870 a small town called "Beachwood" developed about 1 mile north of downtown Beaumont between First Street and Second Street but this development failed due largely to lack of available transportation or water access for locals living close by In 1908 Mayor John McNamara set up a Municipal Court located one block east of Main Avenue between West Eighth Streets and East Ninth Streets; thereafter all criminal activity stopped inside municipal limits although law enforcement continued outside municipally owned property until 1912 when McNamara moved courtrooms into municipal buildings making it possible for more police officers without having to leave town As late as 1969 there were still 4 patrol cars assigned full time each month policing just over 2 square miles within municipally owned properties outside town limits while crime syndicates operating out of unincorporated areas managed To get around these restrictions they simply created fake addresses such as "123 Main St." etc.) However by then things had changed much enough that one night two criminals driving through town using fake identities pulled over on I-10 southbound near Claremont Boulevard noticed 6 uniformed policemen parked along side the road & announced themselves as police officers before getting away quickly This event led directly to establishment of today's regular SWAT team program providing security for both government officials & private individuals

It is the third-largest city in San Bernardino County and the largest city east of the San Gabriel Mountains. Beaumont is located on Interstate 10 near the communities of Winters and Monrovia. The first European to see what would become Beaumont was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 2, 1542 when he sighted land which he named "San Bernardino" after his patron saint in Aragon, Spain. On October 6, 1779 Lieutenant Colonel George Washington arrived at Monterey Bay with his British expedition and named Point Conception (now part of downtown Montebello) after General James K. Polk's headquarters during the American Civil War because it was here that General Antonio José de la Cruz landed his forces with their supplies for this attack on Mexico City from 1847-48 known as Battle of Palo Alto. In 1881 Beaumont had a population of 535 people; by 1907 its population had grown to 1,829 people due to settlement by Chinese immigrants who became farmers and ranchers in the area around present day Beaumont Boulevard and Mission Road. In 1912 Beaumont joined with other cities in forming what would become known as Southern California Edison Company because so much electric power lighting was needed for agricultural purposes during World War I. The loss of jobs throughout California caused many families to move out into North America between 1920 and 1930 including many from Beaumont who settled in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania where they built a large shopping mall which still stands today called The Mall of America Complex

It is the second-largest city in Orange County after Santa Ana and the largest city east of San Francisco. Beaumont stretches for about 111 miles (180 km) from its downtown core to its southeastern periphery along Interstate 5. The first European settler in what is now Beaumont was Pierre Dorion who arrived on July 16, 1776. He named his new land Rancho Santiago de la Bahía de los Padres Anglos because he had been told by Spanish missionaries that this area lay within the kingdom of Spain. The town began as a small agricultural community near present day Downtown Beaumont and developed into a local port on the Sam River which served as an important transportation hub for goods coming from inland and outlying areas of Southern California and Nevada. In 1881, businessman George Hearst founded Hearst Ranch which became one of America's most powerful media empires. Located on much of what is now Beaumont's eastern edge then bounded by I-5 to the south, I-10 to the west and US 101 to the north, Hearst's ranch stretched from present day downtown Beaumont all the way upriver to Escondido where it ended at another boundary with Hearst Ranch property just upstream from today's Aliso Viejo Community College campus.-Beaumont has long been home to many prominent people including former Governor Jerry Brown (D), Hollywood star Whitney Houston (R), real estate magnate Steve Ballmer (R), mayors Darrell Steinberg (D), Art Acevedo (D), Bob Filner (L) and Antonio Villaraigosa (D).
