The history of target holders in Beaumont, California begins with the establishment of a shooting range there in 1912. The first targets were created from logs that had been cut down on the Rancho San Patricio property. There was no airgun then and so target holders were made by suspending a log from a cord around an axle, then luring animals to run across it, getting them close enough to hit the target. In 1916, Beaumont became home to the worlds first indoor rifle range which served as an excellent proving ground for airguns. By 1922, such ranges were being built all over America and Target Holder Inc., began manufacturing them in Beaumont. They continued making these products until 1952 when they merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1957, Winchester absorbed all other American Rifle companies into their company and those products continued to be produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company until 1993 when they sold their entire line to Browning Corporation who continue production today.

Beaumont is located on the eastern edge of downtown San Bernardino and is bordered by Riverside to the north and east, Ontario to the south and west, and Kern County to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Beaumont were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. The present site of Beaumont was part of Rancho Niguel de los Angeles (now part of eastern Kern County) where José Gabriel Mora y Muñoz owned over . In 1836 Mexican General Antonio López Tovar assigned Texas land grants totaling in ranchos bounded on the south by Los Angeles River with Rancho Niguel to the east, on both sides of that river by missions established by Father Francisco Xavier Reyes near Needles (now Big Bear Lake), and extending northeasterly into Orange County. These grants were known as Rancho Santa Ana del Californio or Rancho Viejo de la Costa or sometimes simply Rancho Santa Ana. In 1838 Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered Captain Emory Dewey during his Visit to California campaign to explore opportunities for founding a station on El Camino Real between Sacramento and Monterey Bay. Dewey found no suitable sites for an establishment but recommended that Loreto Mission be used because it had a well water supply available without filtration through sandbars. There is a long and varied history of shooting target holders. The first known shot was fired from an animal skin sling in the 6th century BC. Target shooters developed over time, with some using crude wood or leather stocks and others using more sophisticated devices. In 1892, a Patent application was filed for the creation of a shooting platform that could be attached to a wall or other surface for use as a target holder. This innovation would later become known as the bulldog stand. By 1912, automatic target holders had been invented that allowed shooters to hold targets without having to take their time sighting them down. In 1935, gunsmiths designed and patented the electric firing device that became known as the electric rifle stand. This invention greatly increased accuracy when aiming at targets. The area now known as Beaumont was first part of what was called "District of Monterey" which stretched from Santa Ana up the San Gabriel River to Pasadena, including much of what is now Downtown Los Angeles. In 1827 Joshua Beaumont purchased land at present-day University City on the west side of Mission Bay for $2,000 from José Castro cornering what is now Olympic Boulevard/First Street; today’s upper campus of UCLA lies just south of where Castro once stood (and before that Peachtree Road). The town site name comes from Captain John Cook's 1769 map which showed a forts called Beauséant (now Baca Heights) on both sides of the river near present-day downtown LA; Burnside named him Major General Commanding all Reserve Forces under his command at Los Angeles during Mexican War - after that place also became known as Baca Heights due to periodic flooding there during heavy rains upstream from today’s downtown LA! In 1828 Joshua Beaumont donated land comprising most or all of modern day Beverly Hills except for some parts east and northeast thereof along Pico Boulevard/Beverly Boulevard northward to Pershing Square; those areas were annexed by Beverly Hills when that city was established in 1896! It should be noted here that Beverly Hills did not become a separate municipality until 1903 when it absorbed nearby Playa del Rey - so it could not possibly have been named after Captain John Cook's earlier mentioned fortuitous donation! Anaheim wasn't incorporated until 1905 which means its history goes back even further than Beverly Hills... interesting trivia fact: according to one source, Disneyland actually opened its doors on December 1st, 1923!!!
