Beaumont is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 973 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles area and is the second-largest city in Orange County after Anaheim. The name "Beaumont" was given to it by General Antonio José de Beausejour during his 1821 military campaign against Mexico. Beaumont grew up around two small villages, Beaumont on the east side of San Bernardino Lake and Belle Fourche on the west side of the lake. Both villages were abandoned when gold was discovered in 1848 and prospectors turned their attention to other areas of California. In 1850, Belle Fourche was sold to Chas Sibley for $10,000 and renamed Beaufort; however, Beaufort never caught on as a commercial town due to its distance from mines or railroads. In 1876, local landowner Wm. Hite donated 640 acres (247 hectares) of what would become downtown Beaumont for municipal use; Beaumont's first building, a schoolhouse dating from 1878, burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt with redwood lumber and aluminum siding within one year. On November 14, 1886—the date that Southern Pacific Railway opened its tracks through Orange County—Beaumont incorporation took place under state law with 1% voter turnout because no one had shown up to vote in previous elections; this event served as an early warning system for developers about zoning laws that would be important later on in the city's history. The federal government purchased much of Santa Ana Valley between Antelope Valley (today's Porter Ranch) and La Jolla during World War II so that munitions production could take place without contributing to air pollution nearresidential areas such as Claremont Village which were then near open farmland used for horticulture before becoming residential neighborhoods during post-war boom years.
