Beaumont was founded by Mexican Americans on April 6, 1847 as Rancho Beaumont de la Cueva. The area that would become Beaumont was part of Rancho El Segundo de los unlocked land grant made to José Joaquin Mora by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 15, 1836. On February 14, 1848 a group of thirty men led by Manuel Nieto arrived at what would become Beaumont from Mexico with three oxen and six rifles to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) of rancho for $20 per acre ($740 per hectare). The first post office in Beaumont opened on January 3rd, 1850. The community grew rapidly because gold had been discovered near where it would eventually stand – just east of the present day intersection of El Centro Boulevard and Baseline Road. On December 16th1853 an act was passed by the state legislature which allocated 640 acres (250 ha) of land northward from Mission Bay for erection into town lots; this act became known as "The Gadsden Purchase". The original town plat included buildings located at what is now Main Street/Baseline Road; these were destroyed during the 1906 Earthquake but were replaced within a few years with new structures including a schoolhouse (now part of City Hall), fire station (now South Park Elementary School), Masonic Temple (now called Goodyear Museum Of Art), Post Office and several other businesses before they were all razed following the 1938 earthquake which devastated much of Downtown LA also damaging many buildings dating back to early 1800s including La Casa Blanca hotel which still stands today

The name of the town was changed to Beaumont on July 1, 1879 after it became an incorporated city under the California Constitution of 1850
