These businesses have allowed Beaumont to become a leading producer of quality binoculars around the world. Binocular production began in Germany in 1852 and quickly spread throughout Europe. By 1861, binocular production had reached America, where it continued until 1865. In America, binocular production centered around two main companies: J. Breen & Company and Maynard Brothers company. The first American company to produce high-quality all-metalbinoculars was J. Breen & Company in 1881. During this time period, binocular manufacturers also became known for their innovative design features such as Flexible Eyepieces which gave users variable focusability on different parts of the field of view (Figure 1). The popularity of optical equipment during World War II led to a growth in American produced binoculars (Figure 2). This increase was due to both wartime needs and civilian demand which grew out of concerns about enemy reconnaissance capability (). Many veterans returned home with new appreciation for optical equipment after they experienced combat first hand (). As war progressed, more civilians were turned into experts on using optical devices (), which led to increased demand from military personnel () as well as consumers (). Production at JBL Corporation stopped after 1945 because economic conditions no longer supported such a large volume of product development (). However, some older models are still being sold today () including those produced by Bushnell!.

Beaumont is a small town in the Kern County of California, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Beaumont was founded in 1879 by Captain George Beaumont and his wife Maryanne as an agricultural community on Rancho San Pablo, about four miles east of downtown Fresno. In 1915, all but two of the original settlers were killed when a fire burned down their rancho during a drought season; the survivors began to build what would become Beaumont around that time. In 1924, Harry Chandler bought 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land north of town and began development with support from local business owners and government officials. The first shopping center opened in 1951; other businesses followed over the years including restaurants, gas stations and manufacturing companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co., Monsanto Co., Southern Pacific Railroad Company and Kaiser Permanente Hospital. The city's growth led to its first annexation in 1960 by Fresno; however, it reverted back to Kern County control after voters rejected Measure T in 1982 which would have annexed Beaumont into Fresno more completely than it already had. Finally annexed by Kern County on November 3rd 1987 following passage of Proposition 227%, Beaumont has been an incorporated municipality since then with full power to levy taxes and regulate its own affairs without having to go through county approval or consenting vote from residents. One significant event during this time was when Mayor Tom Bates became mayor after being elected with over 71% majority against opponent incumbent Daryl Bowen who had spent most of his career as a county sheriff; Bates ran on promises to improve public services while also pledging not to annex any more towns into Fresno should he be elected mayoralty again in 2020 or 2030.

Beaumont was founded in 1821 by Captain John C. Beaumont on the Rancho San Antonio, now part of the city of Austin. The first post office in Beaumont was established in 1824. In 1847, Colonel James Fenton and his garrison of volunteers from California under the command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna destroyed a Mexican army at Buena Vista Creek near Beaumont. Santa Anna's forces retreated to Mexico City after losing nearly 1,000 men and seven cannons. The town grew rapidly following its incorporation as a municipality in 1850 with a population of 100 residents. In 1862, Union general Ulysses S. Grant attacked Confederate batteries at Fort Worth Hill and drove them back over the Trinity River into Texas; this resulted in an enormous victory for Union arms which helped fuel American war efforts against Confederate forces throughout the South during the early 1860s. Beaumont saw heavy military action during both World War I and World War II, including fierce fighting at Iwo Jima and Okinawa; it also lost many citizens to illnesses such as typhoid or pneumonia caused by air raids or combat operations. The economy has changed significantly since then, with numerous high-tech businesses sprouting up around downtown Beaumont over recent years; however, much progress has been made in reducing poverty rates among its populace overall since then as well.
