It is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Mono County to the south, Kern County to the east, and Oroville National Park to the north. The first Europeans to visit Barstow were Spanish traders in 1769 who named it "Barreto". The town's namesake is Arthur Barritt who settled there in 1851. The first post office was established in 1874. The name of Barstow came from one of several places called Barbary Coast because so many pirates used this area for both business and hideouts. The early settlers were mainly farmers with a few ranchers renting land from local ranchers. A mill was built in 1917 which still operates today as a sawmill and power plant. In 1923, BARSTOW BROADCASTING CO., LTD., became BARSTOW RADIO COOPERATIVE INC.. OPERATING FROM THIS GROUND thru UHF Channel 22 until its absorption by KNTV-DT PHX on Oct 1 1976; KNTV-DT being then owner of UHF channel 9 (the old KFI). On Jan 7 1998 KQED-FM changed their call letters to KEITH FM effective dates July 81998 THROUGH JULY 15 1998; At that time KEITH FM held an ownership interest in KOJO AM/FM which through licensee KSFO-FM took over operations of KEITH FM thereby assuring CONTINUED USE OF THE BARSTOW NAME FOR CABLE Television Stations INCLUDING KEITH TV personalities HARRY KING JR./CHRISTINA WEBB

Barstow is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,507 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the Mojave Desert and is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Barstow were Spanish explorers who charted its location in 1542 as Lázaro de Mendoza and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. At that time it was known as "Las Nubes". The Miwok people lived nearby for many years before they were forcibly relocated to central California by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1846. In 1868, prospectors discovered gold near what would later be called Barstow and began an influx of settlers into the area. In 1892, Barstow was platted as a post office under the name Victorville with A. H. Davis as Postmaster-General. By 1914 there were over 1,500 people living in Barstow proper; however only 100 remained by 1920 when World War I started and their numbers plummeted due to conflict within America's warring factions (the Californian Gold Rush had ended). During World War II most of the men working at Lockheed Aircraft plants outside Burbank went into service in Japan; however about one third of all workers at these plants came from Barstow including more than half of those employed at Plant No. 2 which made B-24 Liberators for American forces during WWII. About half a million cars were produced here between 1945 and 1950; however production stopped when barbed wire replaced metal fencing around plant sites after Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led to US entry into World War II with Empire Status which halted production while war effort continued elsewhere
Barstow, California was founded by prospectors in 1853. The first post office was established in Barstow in 1854. The town was named for Captain Augustus B. Stowell, who explored the area in 1848.
