It is located on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered by Joshua Tree National Park to the south and east, Nevada to the north, and Barstow Valley to the west. The name "Barstow" comes from an early Spanish explorer's description of this area as "a place with salt flats." The first Europeans to visit this area were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew in 1542. They named this place San Miguel de Barstow after Antonio Mesa's father-in-law who owned some land hereabouts. In 1821 Mexican authorities renamed this area Alta California (highlands). In 1912, J.P. Morgan established a cattle ranch called Rancho Las Encinas in what is now Barstow Valley. The valley became a popular watering ground for stock due to its easy access to rivers and creeks that ran through it. In 1916, he built a large animal empire here including 4 ranches stretching into today's Kern County: Lassen Peak Ranch; Avila Peak Ranch; Ohatchee Canyon; and Menifee Hills Ranches. He also founded two towns - White Sands Beach (later known as Palm Springs) in 1919 and Sleepy Hollow near present day Tubbs Well Road in 1922 - both of which served as ranch headquarters for his huge herd of horses and camels used for transportation throughout Southern California during those years prior to their importation into Hereford/Arabian horse camel drives across North America during World War I upon demand from American war effort requirements back then! Other ranchers followed suit over time until most of Southern California's high country was blanketed by ranches in those days! Today you can still see remnants of old dude ranches scattered around these hillsides!
