Barstow, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Bakersfield-Tujunga Road. The first Europeans to come to Barstow were Mexican traders and soldiers who landed there in 1846 as part of the Texas occupation of Mexico. In 1847, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at what is now known as Main Street in Barstow while exploring Rancho San Luis Obispo de las Palmas grant he had won from Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1862, Ulysses S. Grant visited Barstow and recommended that Californians move westward into what would become Nevada Territory because of the potential for gold discoveries in that area. The town was platted in 1865 by Hurlbut & Company under a land grant from Don Carlos Lara y Costilla. German immigrants began arriving in earnest during this time and erected homes on some of the later ranchos given to them by Spanish landowners; many of these settlers intermarried with local Mexicans and developed a close cultural connection which persists today. The post office was established at Barstow on November 7, 1867, by Wm. Fenton with one act of Congress; it served until it was discontinued on October 1, 1913 (the last day an American mail service operated). A new post office was opened at citrus country near present-day Laughlin after less than two weeks notice being given to citizens thereof by First Postmaster Jno. Pritchard; both buildings became operational December 12th 1870 according to contemporary records however they have been demolished since then? A store built by native Sonoma County pioneer Augustus Herriman occupying present day Third Street took shape following growth within its own limits over several years starting around 1880 when feverishly grasping hands started shoveling earth onto flat roofs making “Houses” out o f adobe bricks etc leading up Third street thenceforward development proceeded apace Finally becoming finalized circa 1890 when business became too great inside building so property owner sold lot back to government for $2 per acre

Barstow, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is near the city of Los Angeles. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Barstow were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769. The name "Bartow" comes from Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de la Hoz's attempt to find a water route into California from Mexico City. He named the place San Bernardino de las Palmas after his patron saint, who had recently died in Spain. In 1824, United States General James K. Polk traveled through Inyo County on his way to meet Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. On his return trip he passed through Barstow and made landfall there on September 12th, 1824 as part of his journey across Southern California. A small military post was established here by Captain John Sutter during this time and it continued being used until 1851 when it was transferred to Rancho El Cajon (now called University Park). A post office called Bartow was established in 1853, and remained open until 1907. The community developed around a Methodist church which was built in 1850s on the site of an earlier Native American mission known as Chiricahuaoya Mission Site No 1 (Chiricahua missions). After years of use for agriculture only citrus farming has been carried out since then; however, some industries have also arisen such as lumber production and animal husbandry due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and Las Vegas
