In 1907, a man named Edward W. Barber developed and patented a type of earplug that allowed shooters to hear their shots more clearly. The Earplug quickly became popular among America's shotgunners, and today they are still used by many to this day. Barstow, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 9,282 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont-Norco Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Barstow" comes from an 1847 map by Antonio Banderas and named for José Maria Barstojo, who ranched there in 1845. From 1902 to 1936, it was known as "Butte City". In 1906, James Waddell Swanson opened a grocery store in what is now the old post office building on Main Street. The first post office was established at Butte City on February 15th of that year. In 1912, Barstow organized as a town under the jurisdiction of San Bernardino County and became self-governing within its own government with a mayor and five trustees. On November 17th of that year, Butte City merged into Barstow despite protests from residents because they felt their community would benefit more from joining than staying separate. On January 1st of 1915, the Great Western Railway reached Barstow and began serving the town with locomotives hauled by horses and wagons; this made BARSTOW THE VERY FIRST COMMUNITY TO BE SERVED BY A RAILROAD IN SAN BUTTE COUNTY! A new store was built on Second Street in 1916 which became known as The Gilded Cage restaurant until it closed in 1984 after years of being used as storage space for various businesses including fabric stores and dry cleaners before becoming abandoned again until 2008 when it reopened as a Bed & Breakfast Inn called Painted World Inn & Spa which has been currently operating since 2009! In 1934 both buttes were destroyed by fire leaving only Horseshoe Gulch remaining which led to settlement growth around what is today First Avenue between Springdale Road and Seventh Street) In 1938 James Waddell Swanson died suddenly leaving his widow Alma Swanson to run her husband's business; she continued running The Gilded Cage restaurant until her death in 1951 also leaving behind three daughters: Marjorie (1942-2008), Lori (born 1945) and Kathy (born 1948). In 1969 Alma Swanson's daughter Marjorie married Johnnie Leland Seabrook Jr., who had moved to Japan after World War II while his father served time in prison for taking over his father's business during WW2 which eventually led to Seabrook buying out Alma Swanson's share back in 1978 along with her three daughters resulting in them having total control over their mother's business once again! Barstow is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mojave Desert Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to explore and map what is now Kern County was Juan Bautista de Anza on his 1769 journey from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico to California. He named the area Yuma Canyon after a nearby canyon that he sighted on his way east. However, there was already a settlement here by 1824 when Captain George Folsom founded Folsom Landing on Elkhorn Ranch in present-day Barstow. A post office called Fremont County for about twelve years beginning in 1838 but it was moved to Placerville in 1841 due to postal service problems at Fremont City (Fremont). In 1847–1848 Major John Sutter explored the San Joaquin Valley and discovered gold nearpresent-day Fresno; this led to intensive effort by farmers and miners over many years culminating with an USGS survey of California’s interior in 1850 which found large amounts of gold and silver ore near present-day Stockton and Fresno. The discovery prompted further exploration including those led by Lieutenant Comstock via Humboldt Bay until they reached their goal of finding the Central Valley’s source of water supplies some seventy miles northeast of today’s Barstow on October 15, 1858 while exploring Mud Creek Gulch prospecting party; Comstock later became known as America's first hydrologist. Gold rush days began January 24th with early arrivals from Oakland who had been promised passage downriver if they found nuggets worth more than $5 each unrecognized as “doubleshot pieces cut out of granite blocks only three inches square” but soon enough everyone knew what they were looking for as bars started coming off the ground all around them like rainwater cascading off a high roof into someone’s garden… Gold Fever quickly turned into Cholera when people got too close to where the gold was being unearthed without sufficient protection from cholera cases that had been reported earlier along Dogpatch creek just outside Yuma Canyon during winter months In February 1861 local doctor J W Hammond contracted cholera from one of these campers and died within two weeks most likely from effects of drinking water contaminated with arsenic added during processing although this theory has not been proven thus far The Gold Rush officially ended on April 6th 1861 when General David Dixon ordered all boats back up river because he realized there would be no more finds worth exploiting By 1870 less than 10%of all claims filed were accepted resulting mostly because prices had already topped $1 million per ton turning even some silver mines into worthless piles of rubble . Many towns developed around mining sites but few remain today including downtown Barstow which retains its Spanish Mission architecture despite having no real purpose other than providing access for drivers going east or west on I-15 . Today much remains unchanged such as downtown plaza complete with century old adobe buildings housing various agencies including fire department
