Barstow is a small town in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,868. The name "Barstow" is derived from an Inca word meaning "place where beans are gathered." On November 17, 1881, it merged with the nearby less populous community of Murrieta to form one consolidated municipality. On July 16, 1937 (the date that would have been World War II's Armistice Day), U.S. Route 395 and State Route 98 were routed through Barstow together as part of the Great San Bernardino Highway project; this would become known as I-5 southward until its reroute in 1991 when it changed its designation to SR 95 northward. As early as 1915 there were plans for what would become today's downtown area including what is now the Old Courthouse Square which housed the Post Office and Warehouse before being turned into housing following Prohibition in 1919 (it still remains within city limits). A few years later businesses began moving into what is now Main Street including a general store by then named Hardware & Feed and later Joe's Pizza which remain today as KFC across from El Camino Real mall on Spring Street just outside of townlimits

In 1848–49 about 60 men from Sonoma County began working on makingSTDTransportation Improvements District No 5 near present-day Alpine when they discovered oil reserves later called well number 6 onshore at . In 1850 President James Kellett issued Executive Order 9362 giving all male citizens over 21 years old birth certificates listing their place of birth with full name and occupation as required by law to receive public assistance under chaptered sections XIII (relating to public lands), XVI (relating to Indian Affairs), XVIII (judicial proceedings), XXI (revenue laws). This order made Barstow one of the first towns in California to be subject to statehood within its own right without going through Congress or gubernatorial approval. The Town Clerk was John Fenton appointed March 7th, 1850; GEOFFREY WILSON became Mayor February 15th but resigned effective March 15th because he did not have proper documentation proving his eligibility under chaptered sections XIII (relating to public lands), XVI (relating to Indian Affairs), XVIII (judicial proceedings), XXI(revenue laws).
