Barstow, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Barstow were prospectors and traders who traveled up the San Gabriel Valley during the 1820s. By 1827, many residents had moved to Modesto because of cheap land prices there and good water supplies from the Mono Lake system. A post office called Barstow was founded in 1828, but it did not take off until about 1860 due to the difficulty of getting mail out to enough people. The town slowly grew throughout its early years due to its location and access to irrigation waters that supported crops such as barley and wheat. During World War II, Camp Cody was established here by United States troops for training purposes after they landed at Lompoc Bay on December 7th 1944. It served as an internment camp for Japanese Americans until 1947 when they were released under Operation Paperclip into American society without any lawyer or formality (i.e., without giving away their natural rights). As a result of its wartime use, Camp Cody has experienced significantrepair over time including restoration of both main buildings (the barracks/administration building and dining hall) as well as replacement of many original pieces within those structures like streetlights and mailbox panels etc.. The redevelopment that took place following World War II also brought new people into town during the late 1950s through various job-related projects such as Interstate 5 construction eastward between Barstow Junction and Needles which caused a large influx of workers intotown who then started developing businesses within town limits including two grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Ltd./Ft Alger Grocery Co.)and two prior mentioned restaurants(La Terraza Mexican Cafe./Taco Bell').
