The early years of Barstow were difficult as the town was small and there were few resources to support its growth. However, the townsfolk persevered and soon they had built a thriving economy based on their land farming and ranching businesses. They also developed an infrastructure that included a school system, churches, stores, and homes. In 1916, Barstow became part of Fresno County when it was organized from parts of Kern County. It has held onto its independent identity ever since with its own government and local culture. Today, Barstow is one of the most diverse communities in California with a variety of cultures represented among its residents – from Hispanics to Asians to Native Americans – as well as strong cultural ties to many nearby communities such as Fresno and Madera counties.(1) In 1954, when California became an statehood state, Barstow became part of the newly formed Kings county.(2) Despite being part of another county for just over 50 years (until 2003), little change took place within the community until recent times when new development has begun to take hold within the boundaries created during that time period.(3) In recent years there have been several efforts made by locals to revive economic activity within their community which has seen some success including revival attempts for both commercial properties(4) as well as arts & crafts outlets(5). Overall though much work still needs to be done before significant progress can be made towards revitalization within this historic community
The town of Barstow, California was founded in 1867 by James P. Richardson and his wife, Eliza. The first post office was opened in 1868. The town became a reality due to the enthusiastic response from settlers who saw the potential for development in the area. The first store in Barstow was built on Adams Street and soon began to fill up with goods from the surrounding towns and villages. By 1870, there were two schools, a Methodist church, a Grain Elevator and several small businesses including a brewery and bakery. In 1877, Barstow had its first census which revealed that it had a population of 107 people. In 1880, another census showed that the population had increased to 247 people and by 1890 it had reached 514 people! A canal was built through Barstow in 1875 which helped bring more trade into the town as well as providing water service for local farmers. In 1886, the first school was built within town limits; it would be replaced in 1896 when an adjacent building became available. This period also saw growth in agricultural production with crops such as hay, oats and wheat being grown along with fruit trees like apples and pears. A cotton gin also began operations shortly afterwards which helped create jobs for locals as well as supplying goods to other settlements nearby until it closed down in 1925 owing to financial difficulties
