Most of these men had been born in Massachusetts or Vermont and had come overland through Mormon Battalion marches from Utah Territory on their way to find new land grants along the Mexican border. In 1870, Jens Jensen founded thefirst post office at what is now known as Main Street (later renamed State Route 66). By 1876, there were five businesses operating in Barstow: a store, stagecoach stop, three livery stables (all owned by James Rolan), and two hotels: one called "The Grapes" and one called "The Star". A school was built northwest corner of US 66/Rte 64 between 1893-1912; but it burned down on July 4th 1912 just south of its current site due to fire caused by an exploding pile driver used for farming operations across the street from where it stood! In 1916 when US 66 was rerouted eastward following World War I; barstowsite US 66 intersected with what is now SR 190 northbound & southbound making a complete loop around town! This completed loop made it easy access for trucks big enough to carry goods all the way up into downtown Los Angeles including ammunition that had been stockpiled since World War I! When movie star Marilyn Monroe visited outside LA during her headlining engagement at Hollywood's Regal Ballroom on May 5th 1957 she stayed overnight at Harbor Bay Inn while attending services then drove back home via open road within hours having enjoyed nothing more than a bed & breakfast meal! Trophies commemorate this event still hang inside Harbor Bay Inn today
