Barstow, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Barstow was Friar George Bancroft on July 24, 1821 when he and his party were exploring Mono Lake. He named it "Bancroft's Lake" after himself and left three wagons there for prospecting purposes. The site became a popular spot for gold miners because of its easy access to the main road from Sacramento through Mono Pass. A post office was established in 1872 with Folsom as the name and operated until it closed in 1907. The discovery of Gold by prospectors in 1874 led to an increase in mining activity around Barstow but no placer gold found until 1886 when a group led by James Hutton discovered rich grades at Anza-Borrego Springs about 12 miles (19 km) south-southeast of Barstow on Highway 395. The discovery started a new era of mining here that continues to this day. The townspeople soon built their own mills and began marketing goods produced within the limits of their town such as flour, cheese, eggs, cattle and lumber products to other parts of California and Nevada via wagon trains over Indian Trails across these regions which stretched all the way down into Mexico City! As a result of this designation, many mines were closed down and the community gradually declined over time due to lack of access to resources and competition from other areas with greater mineralized wealth. In 1951, the community again began to decline when it lost its government funding which had been provided through the National Park Service's Recreation Programs program; however, some redevelopment has taken place over recent years including a new high school and several small businesses that have opened up around town (most notably GARTS). However, despite these setbacks, BARSTOW remains one of Kern County's most vibrant communities with active civic organizations and thriving economy full of both local agriculture and retail sales opportunities for locals as well as visitors who enjoy exploring its Historic Districts along SR 101A or taking advantage of its numerous outdoor adventures available year-round nearby such as hiking or swimming at Lake Arrowhead or enjoying explore Sonoma Creek Trail throughout much of springtime seasons!
