The first gunsight was a redwood shooting board used by Captain George Bird and his men to target practice. It was not until 1852 that a rifle sight was erected in what is now the First Baptist Church. The present building was built in 1903. By 1860, all states had enactedgun safety laws which required gunowners to keep their firearmsLOCKED UP at all times when not in use or storage. Enforcement of these laws became difficult as people often neglected to do so. The early development of gunsights has been attributed to two key individuals- Isaac Newton and Benjamin Halloran- both of whom were instrumental in helping make firearms more accurate and efficient than earlier technologies. Newton developed a sighting device that allowed shooters to hit targets at over 100 yards with ease while Halloran designed an effective lock system for handguns which allowed them to be stored safely without being stolen or damaged

Barstow, California is a town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Barstow was George A. Smith who arrived in 1853. He and his wife Nellie built a log cabin on Rancho Los Alamitos (now part of Progreso) and named their land "Barstow". Mrs. Smith ran a small post office in the town from 1854-1859 while her husband managed rancho Los Alamitos and did much farming with his hands. In 1858, surveyor George Wright surveyed and platified some land to the east of what is now Barstow which he called Rancho San Gabriel Land Grant #2 following reports by Juan Bautista Alvarado about rich gold deposits near Isleton (then known as Calabasas). This ranch would become one of the largest ranches in Southern California - covering over 350 square miles (1,000 km2). By 1860, many other settlers had moved into what is now Barstow including James Fenton who platted the village site on November 3rd that year; John Pimentel who bought Lots 1 & 2 from Capt Ewing for $500 on October 5th 1861; Hiram Perry leased Lot 3 from Capt Hutton for $6/acre on February 11th 1862; Ezra Richardson leased Lots 4 & 5 from Capt Hutton for $5 each on October 10th 1862; Samuel Morse leasedLots 6 & 7 from Capt Hutton for $4/acre on December 15th 1863; David Cranch leasedLot 8 from Capt Hutton for $3/acre on March 25th 1865; Emmett Burnett Jr., son of Elijah Burnett purchased Lots 9 & 10 fromCapt Hutton for $2 each on January 16th 1865.) Fenton's Village Site became home to about 120 people when it was platted - all but 20 being new arrivals subscribed to Fenton's Academy which functioned as an elementary school until 1889 when it became an LCTD Depot duringWorld War II before becoming an open air museum today open to the public.. In 1863 John Pimentel also built a gristmill replacing an earlier one that had been destroyed by Indians in 1852 southwest of present day downtown Barstow. By 1870 there were six stores and two blacksmiths operating out of Fenton's Village Site including Jno Pimentel’s Store No 2 which still stands today across street west of Center Street just north of State Route 54 between Interstate 15 and I-10 www . barstovillecom
Barstow was founded in 1853 by W.H. Barstow and his brother-in-law, E.W. Hill. The town became a post office in 1855 and a town hall in 1961. In 1966, the post office closed and the town library opened. The first school was built in 1854 and the first teacher was Mrs. Jennie Weemsworth. The first store opened in 1865 and the first grocery store in 1870.
