The town was founded by Captain George Barstow in 1847 as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Los Angeles and Sacramento. The first settlers in what is now Barstow were Cache Creek Indians who arrived in 1845 from central California. By 1850, other groups had also settled there including the Humboldt Bay tribe of Coast Miwok Indians, Spanish Missionaries led by Father José de Arguelles, Russian fur traders (Eugene Rossi among them), Mormon pioneers, and Easterners such as Daniel Boone and Jedediah Smith. Captain George Barstow's Stagecoach Stop became an important junction on this mail route as travelers traveled between L.A., San Bernardino County, northern Inyo County and points north to Yosemite Valley or south to Bakersfield or Stockton. During most of the nineteenth century it was one of only two stations open along this route; the other being Ensenada post office about 12 miles east of present-day Barstow on State Route 146. In 1886 John Wesley Powell discovered Muir Lake while exploring Yellowstone National Park; he named it after his friend Catharine Muir who had donated land for that purpose within minutes of seeing it from her house on Mount Tamarack near Saratoga Springs (now Saratoga Springs National Monument). After years of speculation over who would take possession should Muir's donation turn into a park, President Ulysses S. Grant acquired title to all but twenty-four square miles (77 km2) of Muir Ranch in 1893 when he designated it part of Glacier National Park
