Barstow is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Route 31 just east of Anaheim and north of Anaheim Hills. The first person to settle in what became Barstow was James Hargrave in 1853. He built a cabin on the site of today's Hotel del Coronado which he named "Hargrave's Castle". The first post office in Barstow was established in 1857 and the first store opened in 1865. After Hargrave's death his widow, Susan Hargrave, ran the business until it closed its doors for good in 1906. In 1907 James A. Fenton purchased from Susan Hargrave the land that would become today's downtown area of Barstow. Fenton built two stores and a hotel soon after opening up shop: The Fenton House (now the corner of Main Street and Figueroa Avenue) and The Palace (now the main building at 4th Street and Euclid Avenue). However, by 1915 only one store remained open; Fenton had lost interest in the town after selling his holdings to local businessmen Harry Sinkins and Harry Wilsess). By 1916 only 5 people lived in Barstow proper while 7-8 businesses&the Post Office operated side-by-side along with several residences &a dancehall on 2 acres near Elmhurst Avenue/UCLA campus (now known as Citrus Hall). Growth stalled during World War I when many residents enlisted or took up service; however, by 1919 there were over 20 businesses active with 1,000 residents living within walking distance of both their businesses &government buildings including City Hall & jail cells for civilians during WWI.) In 1925 developer Charles Balshaw purchased all remaining property from Fenton for $2 million dollars making Barstow an official city Limits town under future statehood laws! Balshaw immediately commenced development proclamation Construction began soon afterwards with plans call for a busy commercial district anchored around Northwood Boulevard/UCLA Campus with monumental new civic center designed by architect Edward Laidlaw which would include a movie theater/restaurant/promenade overlooking downtown streetscape complete with fountain flanked by live oaks trees!
