Barstow, California is located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. It is a small town on the east side of the San Gabriel Mountains and it is part ofooth Kern County. The name "Barstow" comes from Spanish meaning "bayou". The first settler in Barstow was George Wagoner in 1847. In 1853, James Fenton founded a post office in what is now downtown Barstow. In 1863, General Doniphan built a military fort here to protect settlers from raiders and outlaws who were roaming the area at that time. He also named this fort for General Philip Hernando de Soto, who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The post office closed in 1907 but reopened one year later as First National Bank with local lumber merchant John Crouch serving as its president and chairman until his death in 1915. The bank failed in 1923 but reopened two years later as First National State Bank with local oilman Earle Chandler serving as its president until his death in 1933. That same year, Barstow incorporated as a village under state law and became an unincorporated community again under federal jurisdiction due to its remote location within Kern County limits (it had been an unincorporated community since 1907). In 1935, Route 66 bypassed Barstow by entering Rosamond through nearby Offutt Air Force Base; so much so that when US 61 Alternate designation was given to that route along with former US 66 Business routes 1-2-3 north of Offutt AFB on July 6, 1936 it was called simply “US 61” all the way to Shafter which then became “Barstow” junctionunctionally with old Business Routes 666 & 667 about 3 miles south of town center just past today’s northwest corner Cemetery Street intersection
