Barstow, California is a small town in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Los Angeles and 10 miles (16 km) south of Porterville. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The name Barstow comes from two different sources: one from 1849, when Spanish traders visited this area, and another from 1853, when William H. Barstow settled there with his family. The first settlement was on a ranch called Rancho Viejo de la Paz and the second on Rancho San Francisco de los Padres. The village began as a small agricultural community in 1911 when members of the Methodist Episcopal Church built a wooden church and school in what is now the center of town. By 1925, it had grown to include a post office, several stores, and five homes. In 1928 it became an incorporated village under state law designed to promote growth by providing social services such as health care and recreation for its citizens. When Interstate 5 was constructed through central California in 1933, Barstow became one of its most important locales because it served as the eastern terminus for the highway. During World War II many people worked on navy ships anchored offshore at Point Mugu Naval Air Station which resulted in widespread development around Point Mugu Boulevard which runs through town - including large shopping malls (the Imax Dome mall opened in 1967), numerous high-end restaurants including L’Atelier steak house (opened 1984), Regal Cinemas (opened 1990), Bel-Air Casino Resort & Spa (opened 2003), The Forum Hotel & Casino (opened 2009) - all within walking distance of each other; along with new housing developments such as Harbor Village Place Apartments project completed in 1969; Beacheside Plaza apartments completed in 1992; Harbor Ridge development completed 2005; Newport Park Village apartment complex finished 2006; Point Mugu/Downtown/Boulevardwalk projects started 2006-present As much as anything else during this time period it seems that downtown Barstow went through rapid transformation... building continued until after 2000s while commercial areas grew more mature but saw little redevelopment

Barstow, California is a small town located in Humboldt County, California. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The town of Barstow was founded by settlers in 1849. It was named for Capt. Nathaniel Barstow of the United States Navy who served as Commanding Officer of the First battalion and later brigadier general during Mexican-American War. A post office operated in Barstow from 1849 to 1861. The first school in Barstow opened on November 3, 1850. In 1860, it became a dry county and no mail service arrived until 1865 when the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived and began providing postal service to the community. In 1902, oil was discovered in nearby Kern County and drilling began immediately for oil wells at what would become Anza-Borrego State Park (now known as Arroyo Seco State Recreation Area). The towns of Asuncion and Refugio were established adjacent to Camp Baldy because Ofchamberlin Well No 6 had been drilled there earlier that year; both communities were incorporated as municipalities on January 15, 1903. During World War II, General George Smedley Field set up a command center here called "Aurora" which operated from 1944-1945 during World War II's Korean conflict with North Korea
