The town was founded by brothers John and Joel Barstow in 1867 on a ranch that they had acquired from Pio Pico. The bar stools found throughout the area are still popular today and were originally used to serve refreshments during railroad car rides through the area. The name "Barstow" comes from one of their cattle brands that consisted of three bars running down its middle. As an agricultural community, Barstow produced hay, cotton, fruit trees, vegetables, and meat until it closed its doors in the early 1960s due to overpopulation and changing agricultural patterns in Inyo County. Today Barstow has a few businesses which provide services such as HVAC repair and bicycle sales; however most residents rely heavily on farming or outdoor recreation for income. One of the earliest pioneers of Barstow was Confederate general Jubal Early who arrived here with his forces during the Mexican-American War to scout new land for Rancho San Joaquin near present-day Needles, Arizona

Barstow, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,711 according to the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a Rancho Barstow Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Barstow in 1847. The current spelling is based on an historic pronunciation of the name which was Bu-ar-ston. The first European settlers were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1776 and named the area "San Bernardino." A year later, they founded what would become Barstow on an available piece of rancho that José Nieto had purchased from Manuel Nieto. From its beginning as a tiny outpost, Barstow grew rapidly thanks to its natural resources and railroads that connected it with other settlements in Kern County. By 1881, it had reached its present size with about 1,500 residents. The post office at Barstow was established in 1875 and remained operational until 1964. During that time, it served as the central point for mail delivery between San Bernardino and Riverside counties. In 1941, during World War II, the town became one of several areas along the then-new Central Valley Highway (now Interstate 5) that were bombed by Japanese forces during their attack on Pearl Harbor. All but two buildings within walking distance of downtown were destroyed or damaged; however, few people were killed or injured as a result of the bombing campaign. In 1972–73 United States Congress passed HR 648 which made BARSTOW an incorporated city under state jurisdiction with full powers over municipal services and taxation similar to those enjoyed by cities such as Riverside and San Bernardino proper; this change took effect July 1 following passage by both houses of State Legislature concurrent with signature by Governor Ronald Reagan effective August 2††.*‡††*. On November 3rd 1978 BARSTOW achieved independence from Kern County when voters approved Proposition 223 which granted cityhood to BARSTOW †††*. Today BARSTOW continues To celebrate its centennial anniversary through events including: various picnics/festivals throughout summer months; special programs honoring key local figures & events throughout fall & winter months; Parade on Saturday October 14th each year featuring floats representing many businesses in downtown streetscape
On October 15, 1847, a group of Mormon settlers founded the town of Barstow on the edge of present-day California. The first post office in Barstow was established on November 1, 1847. In 1861, the town was renamed to honor Capt. John W. Bartlett who fought in the American Civil War as a captain with the Union army.
