Barstow, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater L.A. metropolitan area and is located on theomingo Rancho Seco Mexican land grant granted in 1849 to José María Cisneros. The Barstow Hotel and Casino was built in 1911 by developer George Hearst. The community was named after Augustus Earle Bartlett, an American settler who came to California in 1847 and platted what would become Barstow on November 2, 1851. In 1870s, John Wesley Powell explored the Wasatch Mountains and reported finding evidence of ancient human habitation in what would later become Barstow County; this led to the town's name change from "Bartlett" to "BarstOW". In 1912, developer George Hearst purchased the rancho from José María Cisneros for $1 million ($ as of 2019). He soon began developing it into a resort town with whaling shipyards (the first such facility in Southern California) on one side and luxury hotels on the other. The Hearsts also founded Hollywood Bowl Studios (now known as Lucasfilm Ltd.), which became one of Southern Californias most prominent entertainment attractions during prohibition era film production. As more people moved into Barstow during this time period, annexed neighboring towns such as Hesperia and Imperial Valley until boundary dispute between them caused all but Imperial Valley to merge into Barstow effective January 1, 1959 The commercial center of today's town began expanding rapidly during World War II when many local residents enlisted in military service or worked at war-related businesses such as aircraft manufacturing plants or munitions storage sites. Many bars and restaurants closed during that time because there were no wartime visas available for civilians living abroad; however many reopened once hostilities ended Afterward many bar owners/ Employees went back into business starting pubs called The Dog House which still stands today across from county courthouse & library

Barstow, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area and has been visited by people from around the world for centuries. The first human settlement in what is now Barstow was made on December 12, 1853 when three men named Waddell, Goldin, and Sutter camped near present-day Interstate 15 and founded a trading post called Silver Lake. In 1877, James Irvine built a cabin on land that he had purchased from José Gabriel Reyes. By 1880, there were five settlements in Barstow: Irvine (later renamed Crescent City), Girdwood ( later known as Carlsbad), Higgins Landing (later known as Imperial Valley), Mormon Tabernacle (now part of Riverside County) and White Rock Springs. In 1892 two men named Hinkleand bought some land north of where Crescent City now stands and began to build huts which they called "Higgins' Cabin." They also began to raise horses and cattle and grow crops such as wheat, potatoes, watermelons and oranges. The first post office was established at Higgins Landing on February 14th, 1893. By 1896 there were ten settlements in Barstow with a total population of 1,542 people
On July 14, 1847, Barstow became a census-designated place (CDP) in the Inland Empire region of Los Angeles County. The area was named for General James H. Barstow and his family whoesteaded land here in 1846.
