Banning, California is a city located in south-central San Bernardino County, California. Banning was founded on December 24, 1879 by the Banning Mining and Navigation Company. The company was organized to prospect for gold and silver in the Inyo Mountains of central California. The first post office in Banning was established on November 15, 1880. The population of Banning was 1,811 on January 1, 1910. It has since grown to over 21,000 residents. Banning has been home to several notable scopes manufacturers including Rheinau Optics Inc., ZenithOptics Corporation and Orion Optics Incorporated. The city also played host to the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) Ninth General Assembly from 1990-1994 and again from 2002-2004. The Banning Observatory is an astronomical observatory located within the City of BanNING on Mount Mojave National Monument overlooking downtown San Bernardino County. It was built as part of IAU's 9th General Assembly held at BanNING from 1990-1994 and again from2002-2004; it contains two 8 metre Maksutov Telescopes as well as four 20 metre Hale telescopes providing views across most of North America and parts of Europe

Banning, California was founded in 1896 by John Banning and his wife Lillie. The town is located on the Kern River, and it became a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1905, Banning donated land to the town for a school and library. In 1916, Banning died and was buried in the town cemetery. The Banning Schoolhouse still stands in BanNING.

Banning, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of California. The name Banning comes from an old Spanish word meaning "haunted place." The first people to settled this area were the Ohlone Native Americans. In 1849, the United States acquired Rancho San Antonio and then bought more land until it reached present-day Banning. On October 7, 1851, James Wolkert founded what would become Banning with his brother John Wolkert. The brothers started a small post office and store in their home which they operated for over 50 years. In 1928, James J. Dutton was elected as Mayor of Banning and he served for four terms until his death in 1951. Mr. Dutton is credited with building the first high school in the area and creating many tourist attractions such as the Banning State Historic Park which features hiking trails, a museum and art galleries among others. The town has experienced some modifications since its founding but overall it remains an agricultural community that relies heavily on agriculture products such as grapes, apples, nuts (especially almonds), dairy products and other agricultural goods to support its economy. Additionally, BanNING is known for its annual Oktoberfest beer festival which takes place in downtown during September/October each year
