Banning is a small town in the Simi Valley area of California, with a population of about 1100. The first target holders were located on the edge of town in an open lot near the high school. From there they spread to other parts of town and even out into the rural areas. The idea for target holders originated from World War II when service members would take their rifles to ranges across the country for practice. At that time, targets were made out of wood and hung from trees. The first Target Holder was built in Banning in 1951 by John Prentice and his son, Jim Prentice. It was located on Thornton Street between Broadway and Highland Avenue. The Targets at this location could be hit with impunity because they were up high enough to avoid being damaged by artillery fire or other projectiles fired at military ranges during the war years. Unfortunately, due to itslocation, this Target Holder was destroyed by fire in 1965 after only five years of operation! In 1971, Banning’s first gun range opened up on Main Street just north of town limits. This new range had a large outdoor shooting area that could seat over 100 people! The Targets at this range were still made out of wood but now they also included metal plates that would bounce any projectiles directed your way! With so much new activity happening around town, it was no wonder that these Targets continued to be used until 2003 when they finally went away due to budgetary reasons! Banning’s second gun range opened up in 1978 on Weldon Road just east of town limits and it remains oneof Banning’s most popular attractions today! This new range had an indoor shooting area that could accommodate up to 120 people! Again, Targets at this new range were made outof metal plates which would protect them from gunfire while still providing plenty of bouncing action against all typesof projectiles!! With such an impressive array of targets available at both ranges, it is no wonder why these Targets continue to be used until present day!!

There they started raising cattle and goats and later built a sawmill on the river for processing lumber. In 1912 they purchased an additional acreage east of town and dedicated it to growing crops such as corn, beans, tomatoes, sugar beets and raspberries; however this venture failed due to lack of rainwater storage facilities during dry seasons. In 1916-1917 Captain John Banning donated land adjacent to his ranch for school purposes which eventually became known as banner Elementary School; now part of East Valley Middle School District No 81435701
