In 1951-1954 Mayor James Ahern ordered all businesses within the city limits to stop serving milk because he felt that it contributed too much to milk prices outside of town and ordered that all grocery stores close their doors at 4pm because milk prices were $1 per gallon higher than they were inside the city limits. This event is now known as "the milk closing". One interesting fact about this particular moment in town’s history is that even though many businesses closed down after Mayor Ahern’s order (including several restaurants), some did manage to reopen despite having lower wholesale prices because they could sell produce at face value rather than selling milk at high levels
