The first Europeans to visit Banning were members of the Spanish mission colony of San Francisco de Asís on November 7, 1769. A post office called "Banning" was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1903. The town was named for one of the two original inhabitants: Maurice Banning who arrived with Captain John Bickerton from England in 1849. Banning experienced a rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on I-5 and its access to regional munitions plants. In 1945, when the war ended and Japan surrendered, BanNING became an extended military base housing U.S., Australian and British forces until it closed down in 1952. In recent years the economy of BanNING has been based primarily on agriculture and ranching operations; however there are some new development projects such as a Walmart supercenter which opened in 2006 and has led to increased job opportunities for locals. BanNING is also home to many historical landmarks including the MacArthur Reservoir which served as both an armory during World War II and Today's shopping center; Mount Diablo State Park (largest open space owned by California); numerous churches including Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church which serves as headquarters for Holy Name Parish; several hospitals such as Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - Stanford Campus; dozens of small businesses; as well as a few larger restaurants/cafeterias
