Banning, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The population was 5,541 at the 2010 census. Banning was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 on the edge of the Kern River Valley. The city proper was established in 1912 and has since grown to include adjacent rural areas. The first gun sights were set up along the banks of the Kern River, which separates Banning from nearby Bakersfield. These early sighting devices were crude affairs consisting of a few poles with stakes driven into them to help direct arrows shot at an animal or person from a distance. By 1851, however, some enterprising individuals had erected more sophisticated facilities that permitted shooters to elevate their rifles and fire from various positions without having to relocate their mounts or risk getting hit by stray arrows raining down upon them from all directions. Banning’s earliest rifle ranges were situated on two hills east of town near what is now White Sands Lake (now called Black Sands Lake). The range was operated by Captain John Hylan and his son-in-law Capt Benjamin Chaffee under license from Colonel Jervis Polk of Stockton, California. In 1852 Captain Hylan sold his rights to Chaffee and moved his range southward to what is now Red Rock Canyon north of Big Sur also within sight of Banning’s present location on Topo Chico Creek. In 1865 Captain John Hylan passed away leaving behind him three children: wife Margaret (born about 1795), sons Jacob (1866-1937) and Don Pedro Chavez (1868-1929), who together managed the business until its sale in 1924 to Wm Ebert & Bros., Incorporated who still operate it today as Topo Chico Rifle Range #2A . At that time there were six targets: two human targets hung from crosspieces which could be pulled up for shooting; four deer targets that ranged one yard off the ground; twelve “shotgun” targets ranging twenty yards off each side; four recurve bows mounted on poles at thirty feet elevation that could be aimed at any target within five hundred yards using iron sights; and two cannons – one vintage 300 Winchester Magnum caliber muzzleloader cannon built by Ebert Brothers & Co., Indianapolis IN while another 300 Winchester Magnum caliber muzzleloader cannon built by Folsom Brothers company caststeel barrel/stock combination used for target practice only – both still extant today at topo chico rifle range #2a . All but one these guns are currently preserved either stored or displayed insideTopo Chico Rifle Range #2A museum during regular hours or when open for public visitation during special events such as Fourth Of July celebrations etc.. With rapid population growth throughout much of Southern California during this era new rifle ranges began being constructed westward along I-15 just outside Palmdale where Pahrump Ranch became home base for many western gunmen including General Howard Zinnel who parkerized numerous weapons here between 1916 - 1918 From 1919 thru 1935 every year G&P Gunslingers Association held summer pistol matches sanctioned by National Pistol Association competitor roger rhodes across state line in Tucson AZ promoter Gene Pyles paid $3 per match winner plus security expenses
