Banning was founded in 1849 by John Banning and his wife Polly. The first post office was established in 1852. In 1865, Banning became a town, and in 1870 it had a school. In 1905, the town reached its peak with 728 residents. However, during World War II the population decreased because so many people were drafted into military service and then sent to war abroad. The population began to decrease again after the war until it dropped below 500 in 2000. The economy of Banning is largely agricultural with some light manufacturing offerings such as golf clubs and fishing tackle.
