Banning is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,468 at the 2010 census. Banning is located on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It is bordered by the cities of Commerce City and Jurupa Valley to the north and east, Ontario to the south, and Fontana to the west. In 1892, Banning residents named their post office after George Washington Carver (1797-1881), who had helped them with their agricultural problems. In 1907, they moved from their original location near what is now downtown Banning to a new site near Trinity College within its boundaries. In 1916 they changed their name again to Banning because it would be less likely to be confused with nearby Riverside or Jurupa Valley towns which both had similar names (Riverside was given its name by General Anthony Wayne). The community's ZIP code was 91921 in 2000 but it has since been changed to 82334 due to high population growth rates in that area over that time frame!
