Banning, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert located about 145 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. Banning's history dates back to 1875 when it was founded as a post office on the edge of what is now known as Joshua Tree National Park. The town quickly became an important stop on the world's stage and saw its first television show (The Morecambe and Wise Show) in 1951. Banning also became home to America's first Alpine ski resort, Heavenly Mountain Resort, in 1961. In recent years, Banning has seen an increase in development with the opening of several new businesses and restaurants including a Costco Wholesale store in 2002 and a KFC restaurant in 2006. Banning is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in North America and has been inhabited by different groups for more than 10,000 years. The town was originally populated by Paiute Indians who arrived from northern Nevada during the late 17th century. during this time period there were three villages within Banning: Humboldt Creek Village, Red Rock Village, and Clearwater Village which are all still exists today. following Indian Removal in 1848 many of these families relocated to Southern California where they continued to live until after World War II when they were finally forced out by government policies called "the Great Migration" that aimed to create jobs for white Americans outside of rural areas. Banning residents have played an important role throughout their history both on-and off-the-grid with some being key players involved in early space exploration such as Jack Slagle who was part of team that designed landing gear for Apollo 11 while living at Banning High School; Tom Ziegler who helped design America's first nuclear reactor while living here; Don Armstrong who helped open up Desert Sun Mining Company which led to creation of Northern Nevada mining industry which continues today; Glenn Beattie who started construction on Hoover Dam while living here before moving his company across country later becoming CEO Of ITT Corporation; among others
