During World War II southern California was extensively bombed with incendiary shells which caused great destruction throughout much of what are now considered suburban neighborhoods such as Northridge and La Cañada Flintridge; many homes were destroyed or severely damaged including those near downtown Los Angeles which were hit particularly hard due to their location on elevated railroad tracks across from Government Center which served as both a military storage depot for munitions and also served as a bombing ground for residential buildings located nearby including most notably Wallace and Beverly Hills neighborhoods) .
