The town was named for James Baldwin, an American author and social critic who grew up in nearby Pico Rivera. The first post office in Baldwin Park opened on December 9, 1887. The town boundaries were redrawn following the 1906 US Census when Southern California became part of the United States. As a result, Baldwin Park included territory that had been annexed by neighboring cities such as Playa del Rey and Hermosa Beach since 1907. On October 1, 1988, Baldwin Park voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Irwindale because of its proximity to LASD's Hollywood Station and its potential for economic development due to its large number of manufacturing jobs in aerospace and defense products. On November 4, 1988, Irwindale gave their approval to annexing Baldwin Park with a vote of 5-1 against objections from other municipalities in the city including Playa del Rey and Carson City which would have lost millions in tax revenue if they too were annexed into Irwindale. In May 2003, it was announced that Google would be constructing a $2 billion campus in downtown Los Angeles adjacent to Interstate 405 just outside of what is now known as Baldwin Park; this site would later become home to Google’s new research lab Campus de las Americas (CAMUS). In anticipation of CAMUS' construction, many businesses closed or relocated within the borders of Baldwinspark while others formed independent companies with offices near CAMUS or within walking distance thereof like software company Salesforce or phone manufacturer Micron Technology Group Inc..
