Baldwin Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County, California. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The community was named for General Joseph J. Baldwin, who had fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Mexico City. Baldwin Park was first established as an agricultural town on the east side of Orange County, about six miles north of Anaheim Hills and two miles south of Santa Ana. In 1907, Lillian Guggenheim moved her family from New York City to Baldwin Park and started a successful poultry business there. The Guggenheims gave money to various organizations in order to maintain and improve parkland adjacent to their property in present-day Baldwin Park and nearby Cypress Creek Valley where they built their home (now called "The Guggenheim"). The original name of the CDP may have been changed due to competition from other areas in USC's southern district with similar names such as Hyde Park or Westwood Village In 1920, Anaheim mayor George Prentice created what is now known as Koreatown along Miracle Mile in downtown Anaheim by splitting off industrial sections of northeast Anaheim into two neighborhoods – Korean American Section (northwest corner of First Street and Katella Avenue) and Italian American Section (southwest corner of Flower Avenue). This tactic helpedidding Anaheim's commercial center while preserving its traditional ethnic diversity. Baldwin Park followed suit soon thereafter when it became an unincorporated community within orange county under the jurisdiction of the newly formed city of Anaheim through annexation on May 1, 1922 A post office operated at Baldwin Park from 1919 until 1966; letters were sent through John Fenton at his home on Wartburg Road near Disneyland until 1959 when all mail stopped being delivered because Disneyland was converted into an amusement park. Baldwin Park is a small, agricultural town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was originally called Baldwin Heights and was founded in 1892 by businessman George W. Baldwin as a farming community. The name change to Baldwin Park after George's son, Edward H. Baldwin, became mayor ofLA in 1923. The town began to grow rapidly during World War II due to the production of munitions at nearby Monrovia Arsenal and the demand for housing and businesses near diversified commercial districts in downtown LA. The population reached 100,000 by 1951 and increased even more after the war ended with new construction jobs available in the aerospace sector and other industries that developed around LAX airport. In recent years, however, rapid growth has been slowed by increasing crime rates and a decline in manufacturing jobs throughout Los Angeles County which have led to a loss of population density within the town limits. Today, Baldwin Park is home to a small community of primarily retirees, young families raising children outside of school hours or working long hours at local factories that closed decades ago. The sparsely populated townsite still offers some unique features such as its own post office and fire department which are not found elsewhere within Los Angeles County George W. Baldwin founded his first farmstead on what is now Main Street in 1892; he named it "Baldwin Heights." He had come from Cincinnati where he had been born into an affluent family engaged in agriculture since before Ohio became part of Mexico when Spain ceded Texas to America (1821). After coming south many years later through Ellis Island (1911), George W. Baldwin married Laura Hunter who bore him four daughters: Mildred (1895-1982), Alice (1900-1983), Edna Mae (1903-1994) & Barbara Joan (1905-1996). They also had two sons: James H., Jr.(1898-1974) who married Nellie Livingstone Macy & their daughter Darlene(1902-)& John E.(1900-)the father of singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen;and Everett H.(1902-) married Evalyn Higgins & they had one child: Eleanor Elizabeth(b 1905)).
