Baldwin Park is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Tucson-Mesa-Phoenix Combined Statistical Area. Baldwin Park is known for its large oak trees, shaded streets and wide avenues, as well as its diverse cultures which have drawn people from all over the world to live and work here. The first Europeans to visit Baldwin Park were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1769. They named it San Bernardino de los Angeles y la Gente Pobre after Saint Bernardino of Padua, whose feast day was November 10th that year. In 1821, Mexican land grants were given to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his brother Manuel Alvarado in what is now Arizona Territory. The two men agreed to divide this land among themselves according to their share of Indian blood quantum which would result in each man getting about 4 square miles (10 square km). In 1827, John Wesley Powell explored the Colorado River Valley and Fountain Hills area between Prescott and Winslow Junction when he published his "Outline of Western Arizona" through Arizona Territory. This became an early guidebook for travelers looking for potential homesteads in what is now Baldwin Park within present day San Bernardino County. In 1851, Humboldt Bay Company administrator Antonio Aguirre granted a Donation Land Claim on behalf of José Joaquín Rodríguez de Mendoza from Mission Concepción del Valle near Ocotillo Pass northwest of today's Baldwin Park intersection with I-15 (near Scottsdale). When Mexico gained independence from Spain in1821 many families left Mexico for America because they didn't want to become dependencies of Spain anymore. Many Mexicans living east of the Río Grande came overland through California during this time period also called themselves Californios or Californios en el Norte because there was no division between American Indians living west of the Rockies (the Arikara) and those living east of them along the Río Grande including most members of Miguel Hidalgo's army who fought against Napoleonic French forces at Buena Vista Heights on October 8th 1813 during what is considered by some historians as one of history's largest engagements ever fought.
