One of America's most famous gun owners, John Wayne (1904-1975), purchased his very first rifle from an individual named Harry Laughlin in Baldwin Park in 1923. This rifle would later become known as the Silent Night Rifle and is still considered one of America's most collectible firearms. Baldwin Park, California is a small city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. Baldwin Park is part of the South Central division of Los Angeles. It is bordered by Agoura Hills to the east, North Hollywood to the south, and Sherman Oaks to the west. Baldwin Park was founded on November 14, 1887 by George Gallup and his wife Emma Bland as a model community for white Americans moving into southern California after annexation of Southern California from Mexico in 1848. The town was named after Samuel Baldwin, an American politician who served as United States Ambassador to Spain from 1893-1896 and U.S. Senator from New York from 1897-1901. In 1912, local ranchers donated land for a park which became known as Baldwin Park Lake. The city grew rapidly during World War II with housing developments including Vista del Lago and La Jolla Shores being built largely within what is now downtown Baldwin Park boundaries. After years of decline during the late 20th century, growth resumed in recent decades with development around Interstate 10 and other highways providing new opportunities for businesses and residents in what has become one of Southern California's most vibrant communities

In 2000, Baldwin Park had a total population of 9,727 people living within its boundaries (including its annexes), making it one of Los Angeles County's most populous cities with over 10% growth per year since 1990 while remaining relatively stable overall in terms of family size and housing prices over that time period (Los Angeles County median house price increased from $483,000 in 1990 to $1 million in 2007). Baldwin Park contains two large parks - Recreation Center Gardens and Grandview Heights - both with miles-long running courses for dogs and other activities; several small parks including Northridge Recreation Center provide open space for play among youngsters; commercial properties are few but significant: three banks (First National Bank & Trust Company Plaza across Figueroa Street from recreation center), two grocery stores/convenience storesanchored on either side of Western Avenue between Pico Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard - though not all tenants have been successful long term; six schools: four elementary schools (KIPP Brentwood Elementary School on Lankershim Blvd., KIPP Fullerton Elementary School on La Brea Ave., Northridge Unified High School on Venice Blvd.), two middle schools (Socal Middle Schools LAUSD Mission Hills Campus straddling Exposition Road adjacent South Koreatown Community Center) This mix results in a diversity that is increasingly visible as locals work together to create businesses or services which attract tourists or foot traffic onto Fulton Street near downtown LA This diverse mixture also allows merchants who do not fit into any one category(s) much opportunity because they are likely not marketed specifically towards tourists or foot traffic so they can be more sustainable
