The history of these locks is a long one, with different companies offering their own versions of the lock system. One early form of gun lock was a simple key-operated device used by frontier Native Americans to secure firearms from theft or capture. These devices were known as "turtle claws" because they were bent into a shape that resembled an animal's claw. In 1851, John Witherspoon patented his first handgun locker, which he called the "Turtle Claw Gun Lock." This lock was designed to securely store handguns inside a cabinet or drawer. It consisted of two metal plates that were mounted on hinges at either end of a wooden plank that served as the handle. Theplates could be turned to open or close the locker door. The Turtle Claw Gun Lock became popular among law enforcement officers and other professionals who needed to keep their handguns safe from thieves and others who might want to seize them without having to go through traditional means such as stealing someone's locked car or house. In 1892, American Lock & Key Company introduced its own version of the Turtle Claw Gun Lock design, which it call the "Keylock". This design featured four small brass screws that operated within special operating jaws designed specifically for this type of lock (see photo). This new type of gun lock continued to be popular until about 1930 when it was replaced by another more common design - the MasterLock pistol locker (see photo). This design featured six small brass screws instead of four small screws and also had an Operating Jaw feature allowing it to secure guns in multiple positions (horizontal and vertical) around its circumference (See picture). Captain Cranch's well known surveyor, George Parsons, surveyed the area on behalf of both sides and reported back to Captain Cranch that there was no land available east of Mission Bay for settlement. As a result of this report, Mexican settlers abandoned their homes at Mission Bay and moved into what is now Baldwin Park from areas such as Hollywood and Carson City

Since then, it has seen a increase in itsenery and cultural attractions, including a large amusement park called Baldwin Park Racetrack that opened in 1963.
