Baldwin Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 97,971 as of the 2010 census. Baldwin Park is located on the border of Sherman Oaks and Simi Valley. It straddles the east side of LAX Airport and south of Beverly Hills. The first people to live in what is now Baldwin Park were the Tongva people who lived there from 1906 to 1912 according to resident Donny Hanson. The first Europeans to visit what is now Baldwin Park were Spanish colonists who came looking for land to settle in 1769 according to Gabriel García Márquez. From 1836-1845, it was part of Mexican territory called Alta California. In 1861, when California became a state, Baldwin Park became part of Orange County. A post office was established at Baldwin Park on March 3rd, 1868 by Captain Jameson Dyer with the name "Hacienda de los Palos Blancos". The present day site of Baldwin Park was settled by Anglo Americans in 1860s and 1870s because there was no other place for them to go after leaving Alta California during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1876, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered General José Joaquín Buena Ventura to march on Anaheim with 10 companies of infantry and 1 company of artillery across four days using forced marches through Pasadena into Anaheim where he discovered large quantities of gold coins which led him believe that Southern Californians had looted all over Mexico City during their war with Mexico In 1881 Edmund Saylor founded what is now Disneyland while living in Anaheim and he donated land for that purpose including an amusement park which opened on May 15th, 1955 called Disneyland Resort which today contains over 63 million square feet (6 million m²)of parkland including 11 theme parks/resorts: Mickey Mouse’s Whirlwind Adventure (1956), Tomorrowland (1957), Frontierland (1958), EPCOT (1971), Animal Kingdom (1973), Halloween Town (1978), Hollywood Studios (1980) and Epcot Center (. This included Walt Disney World's Fantasyland along with its predecessor Magic Kingdom which opened November 16th 1970). In 1923 John Crain formed Crain's publications company which published El Pueblo Herald newspaper until his death in 1984. His son John H. This rivalry led to some legendary moments such as when both clans staged simultaneous protests against each other's favorite son (the then-mayor) in front of City Hall during his inaugural inauguration ceremonies; or when members of both clans physically assaulted each other during a street demonstration on Easter Sunday 1912 following Mayor John Fenton's decision not to ratify a land swap with rival clan paramour Emma O'Neill. Despite these controversies and struggles, however, Baldwin Park quickly emerged as one of Northern California's most important communities due to its strong economy and numerous cultural attractions. Today, it remains an often-called "community destination" within Orange County because of its unique mixture of cultures and social institutions dating back more than 100 years.
