The hotel became a popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike. In 1865, Benjamin Baldwin married Emma Fillmore which made him one of the first white men to marry a Mexican American woman. The following year, he donated land to create what is now downtown Baldwin Park. By 1870, the area had become an important commercial center with businesses such as stores, churches, and hotels located on Central Avenue and La Paloma Street. In 1892, Emmanuel de la Peña purchased much of what is now downtown Baldwin Park from the Baldwins. He began construction on the modern-day city hall which was completed in 1896. over time, Baldwin Park has undergone many changes both inside and outside of its walls. Some of these changes include becoming a City of San Bernardino within California's Unincorporated Areas system in 1949; being renamed "Baldwin Park" within California's state government after incorporation in 1964; becoming part of neighboring Riverside County within state government in 1992; undergoing major redevelopment between 1995-2001 that saw most buildings replaced or renovated; becoming home to Cal State Northridge during 2011 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament; and most recently experiencing gentrification with new development taking place along Eastern Boulevard since 2016
Baldwin Park was first established in 1884 as a small community on the edge of Los Angeles. The population of Baldwin Park rapidly grew, reaching 5,000 by 1900. In 1910, the city annexed the adjacent unincorporated communities of Bel Air and Eagle Rock. The City Council voted to name Baldwin Park after Samuel P. Baldwin, an early civic leader who served on the council from 1909 to 1912 and 1913 to 1916. The decision was made because Baldwin had been instrumental in developing Los Angeles as a commercial center and also helped develop nearby Eagle Rock into a upscale residential neighborhood. A few years later, the city annexed another adjacent community – Glendale Heights – which led to increased competition for land within the park boundaries. In 1928, Baldwin Park was merged with neighboring Echo Park into one larger municipality called Los Angeles County.
