In 1902, J.M. Palma bought more land and founded what became known as Pasadena City Hall on portions of his holdings which he donated to Pasadena City College for use as an education center and library. The current building was completed in 1912 and serves as both a municipal hall and library services for Pasadena. After Victory in 1945, Downtown LA experienced a period of rapid gentrification which led to increasing tensions between white working-class Americans and lower class African Americans who had been displaced by postwar suburbanization. This period is often referred to as "The Great Gentrification". In recent years, there has been some redevelopment taking place within downtownLA including plans for an arena for the Lakers and another development called “Downtown Live” which would include a mix of residential, commercial and office space along with public spaces like a parkade overlooking Roosevelt Row
In 1853, Baldwin Park was founded by John H. Baldwin and his wife Mary. The town was named for General Philip Sheridan, who had served in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in the town was established in 1857. In 1865, the United States Postal Service established a mail route from San Francisco to Baldwin Park. The town experienced prosperity during the early 20th century due to its location on major transportation corridors and its reputation as a agricultural center. However, during World War II, Baldwin Park suffered significant damage from bombings and fires caused by the Japanese military. The population of the town declined following the war and dwindled until it disappeared completely after 1970 when Interstate 5 bypassed it. Baldwin Park is now a small village located within Southern California's Antelope Valley Regional District.
