Bakersfield began Settlement in the 1840s when American prospectors discovered oil resources in Kern County. In 1849, John Sutter founded the city of Bakersfield on land he had purchased from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The first town meeting was held on November 5th of that year. The name 'Bakersfield' was chosen because there were few other places called 'Baker'. The first store opened in 1850 and by 1861, there were 10 stores operating within the limits of present-day BakersFIELD. By 1865, there were 25 businesses operating within the boundaries of what are now downtown BakersFIELD. One hundred years later, today's downtown core retains much of its pioneer flavor with small businesses clustered around First Street (northwest corner), Third Street (southwest corner), Harrison Avenue (east side), Main Street (northwest corner) and University Avenue (southwest corner). In 1868, Jno. Minkin started a flour mill at what is now Fourth and Maple Streets which became one of America's leading flour mills until 1917 when it closed due to competition from meatpackers who moved into town during World War I. In 1916 Jno. Minkin built a new starch plant along Harrison Avenue which became one of America's leading starch plants until 1938 when it closed due to competition from meatpackers who moved into town during World War II; this mill produced some 60 million bushels per year at its peak! Today only ruins remain including two stories high destroyed Widener Starch Mill building dating back to 1916/17 as well as four story destroyed Post Office Building dating back to 1892/93 - all that remains today are foundations and a single story structure currently used by US Army Ammunition Plant!

In 1836, two men by the name of John Bachman (or John Beale) founded a small town called Bachman’s Land south of present-day Bakersfield on land they had purchased from Manuel Nieto de la Vega y Gascón. There were few permanent residents other than a few seasonal traders due to the harsh conditions during wintertime. However, over time many settlers arrived, including Anglo-Americans such as Andrew Gregg and George Dole who built hotels and businesses along with growing numbers of Mexicans working as farm hands or ranch hands. By 1850 there were over 20 buildings in town alone! In 1862, after American forces won their war against Mexican forces at Pueblo Revolt, soldiers discovered salt mines within miles of where Bachman’s Land now sits. This led to rapid growth for Bachman’s Land as thousands more people descended upon it looking for new opportunities; some engaging in agriculture while others supported themselves through mining and trading operations which soon resulted in a dramatic change for both locals and non-locals: people began referring to Bachman’s Land simply as “Bakerfield” even though it lay largely outside of modern day downtown Bakersfield today! As more people came into town new businesses opened up catering to their needs: flour mills specialising in baking bread revolutionized local cuisine while saloons catering to miners quickly turned into thriving nightlife destinations hosting everything from midgets wrestling matches to dancehall shows featuring top national acts like Harry James & His Orchestra! In 1915 growth slowed somewhat due to World War I but resumed rapidly following hostilities ended; this growth continued until the late 1960s when oil production peaked resulting in declining demand for goods produced within 3 miles of BP headquarters – leading directly to mass layoffs across local industries! The 1990s saw tremendous economic development spurred by NAFTA which brought vast amounts of jobs northward from Mexico City creating Opportunities For All Coveted just like those enjoyed back then by locals – making downtownBakerfield one Of The Most Active Neighborhood Businesses In America Today! Since 2000 however housing prices have exploded making downtownBakerfield increasingly unaffordable for most citizens pushing many out onto streets throughout Alderwood district adjacent To State Route 32A (the "Highway To Hell" moniker given unto this area long ago!) ever since… though occasional brave souls try valiantly TO OPEN UP THAT DISTANCE AGAIN BUT SOONER OR LATER THEY WILL FIND OUT THAT THEIR LOTS ARE BACK IN THE CITY CENTRAL PARK!!
