In 1861, following the Mexican-American War, Californian Stephen Fonda acquired Rancho San Antonio de Bakersfield from James Hutton with the understanding that he would develop it into a permanent U.S.–Mexican border crossing point on his new Rancho Atascadero range near modern day San Diego/Carlsbad. However, Fonda never developed the land as planned; instead he used it for grazing and cattle several miles south along Interstate 10 to serve as a staging area for wagon trains traveling overland from Tucson to Los Angeles through this portion of Arizona Territory during their trip across Mexico into California; moreover, he also built a small mill located on what is now US 101 just west of town limits in order to generate revenue from goods exported down I-10 from Atascadero past his property). Consequently, when Pacific Railroad became operational between Sacramento and Dallas/Fort Worth via Chico in 1885 (following land acquisition by E&P Railway Company), Fonda's original rancho became one of its most important rail junction points east of the Rockies!
