The first shooting protection devices were created in the 1800s for hunting and target practice. In 1876, a German scientist named Wilhelm Meyer patented an Ear-Collar with a hinged metal shell that fit over the ear to protect against gunfire. The device became known as the Pistol Ear-Collar. It was not until 1912 that a shotgunEar-Collar was developed by American inventor John Fenton. The Ear-Collar consisted of two pieces: the inner ear band and the outer ear cup.
