Bakersfield is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was estimated to be 191,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kern County and the 11th largest city in California. Bakersfield is located on the Central Valley of Californias San Joaquin Valley and straddles both borders of the Kern County and Fresno County counties. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Bakersfield. In 1824, James Hutton established what would become known as Hutton's Store on the east side of town. From this store, Hutton supplied goods to markets in Stockton and Sacramento. The first post office was established in 1827 in what is now downtown Bakersfield by Wm. Ewing Postmaster George Fenton with money from his father-in-law Amos Kendall Sr.. In 1848, John Sutter built Sutter's Mill on the south bank of the San Joaquin River just north of where it joins the river today; this mill operated until 1865 when it was replaced by an improved gristmill built by William Mulholland which still stands today downstream from Mission Creek Park off Baseline Road (now SW Pioneer Boulevard). In 1849–50, James Atherton platted what is now eastside streets between First Street and Broadway Avenue after discovering gold near Bridgwater Creek about twenty miles northeast of Bakersfield proper. Gold Mining District No 1 began operating January 9th 1850 from a small adobe building on First Street opposite Galt’s Bakery & Cafe; operations continued for one year until February 4th 1850 when all production stopped due to lack of water supplies needed for mining operations Atherton sold his interest in District No 1 to Nathan Weiser within weeks following its establishment but weiser did not develop it further because he had no experience with running a mine During these years many immigrants came into California through Transcontinental Railroad Yard; some temporary housing was erected at Ashley Gardens southeast of downtown while more permanent buildings were erected later around town including: Christ Church (1851), Thunder Bay Brewery (1852), Pacific Gas & Electric Company Administration Building (1854), Masonic Temple (1855), Presbyterian Church (1856) Eventually development went back onto original plans with more buildings being erected including: Galt’s Bakery & Cafe 1901–1902 addition became famous as “the old red building”; First Baptist Church 1860–1961 addition became known as “the belltower”; Main Street Methodist Episcopal Zionchurch moved from Ashley Gardens during 1906 Earthquake}; American Legion Hall 1916 dedication ceremonies took place here followed by World War I encampment 1919 In 1907 two small stores opened up along First Street called Jugglers Jack's General Store and Willard's Grocery while several other businesses opened up over time such as gas stations: Alhambra gasoline station 1912, Chevron gas station 1915/16, K&L Oil station 1922 etc.; many current day business names also originated during this time like Lone Star Liquor Co., Empire Distributing Co., etc... By 1933 most businesses closed down or moved out except for Jugglers Jack's which continued operation until 1936 . On December 15th 1933 an act providing for statehood for Kern COUNTY failed passage by voters . As a result , Bakersfield remained unincorporated until 1984 when it became part of Kern county . This event marked a turning point for local economy as almost all businesses that once thrived closed down after annexation into larger cities or counties
