Bakersfield, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 149,723 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kern county and the largest city east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Bakersfield is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and north of San Joaquin Valley. The first humans to live in what is now Bakersfield were Native American Mono people who built lodges near present-day downtown in two successive waves from around 1825 to 1828. They left behind traces of their culture when they burned down amission buildings at Mission Viejo in 1846 as part of an Indian War protest against white settlement by farmers. The mission's subsequent abandonment led to increased contact between Europeans and pre-Columbian Native Americans through trade and travel across the Great Basin region. In 1777, while Captain George Vancouver was exploring British Columbia, he visited what would become Bakersfield along the lower Sacramento River delta where he noted rich deposits of mica and other mineral resources. Two years later Spanish explorer José de Arguelles discovered these same minerals south of Bakersfield on Rancho del Rinconada land grant given to Juan Antonio Rios on December 12, 1779 by Governor Manuel Nieto during Mexico City's visit to America for its new viceroyalty. After finding no evidence that rancho desalvados ( saline land grants) lay within his boundaries upon his return from his exploration, Arguelles transferred title back to Rios on January 25, 1780 undercutting Spanish claims over much of California coastal area including today's Bakersfield In 1836 John Sutter established an adobe rancho (land grant) called Sutter's Land adjacent to modern day downtown Bakersfield after arriving with his family from Stockton via wagon train in March 1835 aboard the USS Constitution anchored off shore at Petrified Coast National Monument northeast of Los Angeles Harbor (). On May 14th 1840 Mexican General Antonio Lopez Burzaco surrendered control over Alta Californias west of San Francisco Bay following Mexican victory over American forces at Guadalupe Bridgeover Campaign . At this time most humans living east or northwestof San Francisco lived among Indigenous nations such as Yokuts and Kumeyaay who resided atop ancient Coast Miwok sites Visitacion Peak () & Chimborazo Hill () within 300 miles north or inland from present day Oakland CA & Sonoma CA respectively...This area became known as Rancho Niguel due it being bounded by Mount Shasta Toiyabe District () Oktoberfest Park (), dwellings Of Maryknoll Fathers () situated about six miles SE From modern day Downtown Bakersfeld() today's Old Town Plaza was also founded about this time

Bakersfield is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 153,515 at the 2010 census. The area now called Bakersfield was part of Rancho Doña Ana de Alcalá Mexican land grant given in 1836 to José Joaquin Morral. It became an independent city on February 17, 1896. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bakersfield were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his brother Pedro Alvarez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542. Spanish traders had come down the California Coast from Oregon as early as 1602 when they landed at San Francisco Bay and reported finding "a great body of water" near present-day downtown Bakersfield. A short time later Francisco Vasquez de Coronado found the same body of water and named it La Vergüenza (the Fortune). Baker Creek was likely named for John Baker who bought Rancho Rinconada at its headwaters about 1825 from Manuel Nieto. He built a ferry landing there which may be where the creek got its name; according to one source he bought it from Captain Richard Armistead who also called it Rincón del Viejo (Old Corner). He sold it to Nicholas Jones in 1828, who platted what is now downtown Bakersfield and named it Eureka after his discovery of gold on September 8, 1848 along with other sites around the Sacramento Valley including Butte and Folsom. In 1853 Jones sold additional land east of Main Street to James Wickersham which included much of what is today Downtown Bakersfield as well as parts of Arcadia Heights, Crescent City and North Fresno neighborhoods Today most of that is located in East Kern County inside the unincorporated community of Hacienda Heights east of I-5 or north sideof Highway 99W outside Porterville within unincorporated Hanford settlement Roosevelt Bottom Road . Many natives thought this sale amounted to UK annexation because Governor Goodwin Smith had just been appointed by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt during American Civil War and many Tillman family members served in both Union Army & Confederate Armies On November 12th 1860 Mexico gained independence from Spain & John Sutter arrived in Mariposa county CA with over 20 men looking for newstrike ores after leaving Independence Rock on October 22nd 1800 & claimed Modoc country but no real gold was found so return home in winter 1861 He founded Sonoma Co., USA naming counties after himself ie: Santa Cruz (1861), Marin (1865), Napa (1867),Sonoma(1868) Northern Californias largest copper mining region ever! In 1870 he sold off all his holdings except Modoc Country which became part of Nevada Territory until 1959 When statehood came about these lands were placed under federal jurisdiction
