Smith began to make chocolates from cocoa beans he had collected from Native Americans near his farmstead on Hwy 97 west of Bakersfield. Mr. Smith's son John Fenton took over the family business in 1886 and continued to produce high quality chocolates until it was sold to Nestle SA in 1985. In 1916, Jens Jacobsen founded Jacobsen & Co., which became known as Jacobs' Chocolates Ltd.. The first settlement in what became BakersFIELD was made by Juan Rodriguez and his family on December 12, 1847. This small cluster of dwellings stands today at 8th Street and Katella Avenue west of downtown Bakersfield. In 1850, Wm Fenton established a flour mill on the east side of present-day Katella Avenue; this mill helped to increase trade and commerce in the area. By 1860, over 100 people lived in BakersFIELD. In 1872 Samuel Morse founded Northern Pacific Railroad through BakersFIELD with headquarters located at 609 Elm Street. At that time there were only two steam locomotives pulling trains throughout Kern County: one owned by Southern Pacific Railway and one belonging to Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1876 an electric line was built from San Bernardino to BakersFIELD; this line served as an important link between southern California and northern Nevada. On November 15, 1912 a magnitude 7 (Earthquake) earthquake struck central Kern county; damage resulted from collapsed buildings, injuries sustained during the quake as well as fires that swept through many businesses across town after the shockwave hit ground level objects such as radios and clocks etc.. Many residents who had taken refuge under collapsed or overturned building found their way back home eventually but heavy damage has been done to many homes which remain standing today including several churches also destroyed during that devastating event leaving behind extensive damage .
