It is the second most populous city in Kern County and the 11th most populous city in California. The name "Bakerfield" was given to it by Captain John A. Baker of the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment during World War II who called it "the breadbasket of Kern County." The area now comprising Bakersfield was first settled by Native Americans in the 1820s. One group of these people were the Bidwell Band of Mission Indians who named their village after William Clements Bidwell, an early settler and member of the Board of Supervisors for Kern County from 1868 to 1893. In 1846, George Wickersham founded Wickersham Land & Mining Company in what would later become Bakersfield and began developing land around what is now downtown Bakersfield with assistance from his friend and mentor Daniel Webster Scudder. Webster became president and CEO of Scudder's company until his death in 1925; thereafter control passed through various hands until 1945 when it came under United States military jurisdiction following World War II when Imperial Japanese forces burned down Wickersham's ranch on Christmas Eve 1944 near present-day Pahrump Boulevard just east of I-5 exit 215A (Pahrump Boulevard). As part of General Douglas MacArthur's Operation Downfall which aimed to retake Japan from US forces occupying Japan during World War II, muchof this area including Bakersfield was captured along with other key cities such as Los Angeles and Yokohama on December 7–12 1944. At that time all American civilian life withinTOJAPAN ceased immediately due to bombing raids by USAAF Strategic Air Forces Bomber Command over Tokyo nights between November 28th and December 3rd 1944 – an event which has since been termed "the Great Bombing Of Japan". In 1946 President Harry S Truman announced thatCongratulations! You have won your freedom! The end productof more than three years' hard work will be here before you know it: a new community called 'Baker Field'. This happened on October 15th 1946 when General Dwight Eisenhower signed Executive Order No.: 9602 giving legal status to all those living within territorial boundaries located adjacentto Alameda Bay or bounded by San Joaquin River excepting Oakland City Limits.–This order created almost instant controversy because many residents felt they had always lived within those boundaries.–The order also stated that no city limits were established outside OFJAPAN so any organized effortTo build a boundary between America AND JAPAN was unauthorized.–Nevertheless developers plowed ahead with plans for what would become metropolitan Fresno To serveAlameda Valley while Fresno City Council debated building its own limits around Downtown Fresno but eventually ruled against it because Downtown Fresno already had a large population.–SomeHOWEVER Calaveras Valley planners managed somehow TO get their hands on someOf THAT EO 9602 ordered territoryAND started asking folks northeastOf Donner Lake if they wanted TO BE IN CALaveras VALLEY too? Well guess what folks? We didIt! And we're still here today – making us one big happy family 🙂

Bakersfield, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. Bakersfield was founded on November 3, 1847 by John L. Bowers and named for the then-new location of Palmdale, California. The population was 205 at the 2010 census. It is located in the central valley of Southern California. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruit from the area around present day Bakersfield and Tulare Counties. European settlers began arriving in increasing numbers starting in the 1830s as part of the Gold Rush era. By 1851, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Bakersfield City limits. In 1857, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort near what is now downtown Bakersfield with an idea to trade goods with Native American nations he had recently explored in Northern California. The city became an important transportation hub during its early years thanks to two main arteries: First Street (now I-5) running east-west through town and then Telegraph Road which ran north-south through it connecting up with other towns and counties along the way. These roads allowed for easy access to markets throughout Kern County as well as points further south such as Stockton and Chico that could be reached only by boat or wagon caravan ride or Stagecoach trip. In 1860, when Doniphan National Forest was established within Kern County, most of what is now downtown Bakersfield was included within it including much of First Street which still exists today as State Route 160A (also known locally as "First"). During World War II many businesses closed their doors due to wartime rationing but reopened once war ended; some notable examples include Armour & Co., J&R Henschel & Sons Incorporated (later Honeywell), Wernher von Braun's Los Alamos Laboratory - all of which reopened after 1945 Bakerfields growth continued into the 1950s and 1960s with construction happening on several major streets including Eighth Avenue between University Boulevard/Shasta Boulevard/Eastside Highway/I-5 before coming to a halt during the late 1960s when large amounts of federal money dried up following passage of Proposition 13 . However growth resumed soon afterward with new development taking hold on Third Street between Vinegar Hill Parkway/Kern River Parkway before moving out into Salinas Valley towards Paso Robles . In recent years much redevelopment has taken place Downtown including multiple high rises housing several thousand people along Sixth Street betweenArena Way/I-5 Freewayand North Kingman Road across from UC Berkeley campus among many other developments went under construction or are currently planned including a new Walmart Supercenter being built just South of Sixth Street on Arena Way adjacent to Interstate 5
Bakersfield, California was founded on February 16, 1879 by George A. Smith and James W. Eastin. The town became a city in November of that year.
